Why a used Antminer is often the cheaper way in

A used Antminer costs a fraction of a new one but mines the same blocks. With cheap electricity the purchase price matters more than efficiency: a unit costs €299 versus €1,379 for a new S21. Per terahash the picture is clear: an S19j Pro at the 10-unit tier costs about €2.88 per TH, an S19k Pro about €3.64 per TH, a new S21 about €9.13 per TH. That is why used hardware is the usual entry point for anyone with solar surplus, heat reuse or a commercial tariff.

The risk is not age but origin. ASICs from farms run continuously under controlled conditions and are usually in better shape than sporadically used private units – provided someone tests them before sale. That is the part we do: our used miners are physically in our warehouse in Bavaria, so we open, run and check them ourselves instead of relisting devices from unknown sellers.

How we test a used Antminer before it ships

Every used unit goes through the same process; the result is logged and travels with the unit:

• Visual inspection of case, hashboards, PSU, fans and cabling for damage, corrosion or traces of immersion cooling.
• Cleaning of heat sinks and air paths – dust is the most common cause of thermal throttling on second-hand miners.
• Full load cycle on our own power supply: the unit must deliver the stated hashrate, checked per hashboard, not just on the dashboard total.
• Fan and PSU behaviour under real load, chip temperatures within Bitmain's operating range.
• Firmware in a working state, factory configuration restored, then packed for insured shipping.
• If a hashboard fails, the unit is repaired or the affected board is removed from the batch before it is offered for sale.

Condition labels on used Antminers

We use two condition labels in the catalog – and state them on every unit instead of hiding them in fine print:

• Used – tested: unit from farm operation, cleaned and load-tested by us; hashrate logged per hashboard, cosmetic wear on the case possible, fully functional. This is how we label the Antminer S19j Pro, S19k Pro and T21.
• Like new – boxed: unit in original packaging, never run or only for a few weeks; also tested before shipping. This is how we label the Avalon A1246.
• Statutory warranty for consumers applies to both; we do not add a voluntary guarantee. Exactly what to expect is stated on the product page and in the test log.

Buying a used Antminer from us vs. direct import from China vs. private purchase

A Antminer S19 J Pro can be bought three ways: from a dealer in Germany, imported directly from Asia, or second-hand from a private seller on classifieds or eBay. The table shows the differences that matter in practice – customs, delivery time, statutory warranty, invoice and who you can call when something goes wrong. It contains no opinions, only what each route can and cannot provide.

Checklist for buying any used Antminer

Whether you buy from us or elsewhere, these are the questions that separate a good used miner from a bad one:

• Is there a load test with the hashrate per hashboard? A dashboard screenshot from the seller is not a test.
• Is the PSU original and does the unit come with it? Replacement PSUs are a common source of trouble.
• Did the unit ever run under immersion or water cooling? Boards that have been in oil need special cleaning and often show corrosion.
• Do you get an invoice showing VAT and a reachable contact? Without both you carry the entire risk yourself.
• What is the price per terahash? Divide price by hashrate – this makes offers across models directly comparable.
• What is the statutory warranty? Between private parties it is usually excluded; from a dealer consumers have the statutory warranty.

Which used Antminer suits whom?

• Beginners and solar surplus: the S19j Pro from €299 – lowest capital, proven platform. One unit tells you what 3.1 kW of heat and 75 dB mean in your basement.
• Paid tariffs between roughly 10 and 20 ct/kWh: the S19k Pro from €419 – about a fifth less energy per terahash than the S19j Pro.
• Modern efficiency at a used price: the T21 from €1,049 – 19 J/TH and 190 TH/s in one unit, delivery from our HK warehouse in 10–14 days.
• The absolute cheapest start: the Avalon A1246 at €289 – 85 TH/s at 40.2 J/TH, only sensible with very cheap power. (Currently sold out.)

The new Antminer S21 needs about 41% less energy per terahash than the S19j Pro but costs roughly three times as much per TH. At long runtimes on paid power that premium pays back; for a first unit or surplus power it does not.

How are used Antminers tested at Mining Technologies?

Every unit runs at least one full load cycle on our own power supply before it ships. We check that the stated hashrate is delivered per hashboard, verify fan and PSU behaviour under real load, and inspect hashboards, connectors and case for damage or corrosion. Failing boards are repaired or the unit is removed from the batch. The achieved hashrate is logged and goes with the unit.
