What an ASIC miner is — and is not
An ASIC (application specific integrated circuit) computes exactly one hash algorithm. That makes it orders of magnitude more efficient than GPUs, but also non-repurposable: a SHA-256 unit mines Bitcoin, a Scrypt unit mines Litecoin and Dogecoin, a KHeavyHash unit mines Kaspa. So the first question is the coin, not the model.
In practice: Antminer S19/S21, WhatsMiner and Avalon for Bitcoin, Antminer L7/L9 and Elphapex DG1+ for Litecoin/Dogecoin merged mining, IceRiver KS7 for Kaspa.
Efficiency beats hashrate
Hashrate alone says nothing about profitability. Efficiency does: watts per terahash. A machine at 104 TH/s and 3,068 W (29.5 J/TH) and one at 151 TH/s and 2,650 W (17.5 J/TH) differ by nearly a factor of two in yield per euro of electricity. Always calculate the break-even tariff at which your unit burns more power than it earns.
Rule of thumb: below 12 ct/kWh older models remain interesting, between 12 and 22 ct/kWh you need roughly 23 J/TH or better, above 25 ct/kWh only current hardware under 18 J/TH or heat reuse works.
Buying new or used
New units bring full warranty, current firmware and the best efficiency at a much higher price. Used ASICs from decommissioned farms are tested, cleaned and documented with a logged hashrate — often the better return per euro for beginners and for anyone with cheap power.
