What is a WhatsMiner (MicroBT)?

WhatsMiner is the ASIC miner brand of MicroBT, a manufacturer from Shenzhen that has been building SHA-256 hardware for Bitcoin since 2017 and is, next to Bitmain, the second large supplier on the market. All WhatsMiners mine Bitcoin (and other SHA-256 coins); MicroBT does not build Scrypt or Kaspa machines. The model number describes the generation: the M30 and M50 series are the air-cooled workhorses of the last years, the M6x series is the current generation with water cooling (hydro) and immersion variants.

The WhatsMiner M50S delivers 126 TH/s at 3276W (26 J/TH) and is the classic air-cooled unit: a single chassis with two fans at the front and two at the back, the MicroBT power supply mounted on top and a plain web interface for pool and wallet. The WhatsMiner M63S+ is a hydro-cooled machine from the M6x generation with 418 TH/s at 3550W (17 J/TH): it needs a water loop with a dry cooler or heat exchanger and is built for containers, farms and heat-reuse projects rather than a single rack in a garage.

In practice WhatsMiners have a reputation for robust boards and a simple, stable firmware. The trade-off is a smaller ecosystem: third-party firmware such as Braiins OS is common on Antminers but rarely used on WhatsMiners, and spare hashboards are less widely traded in Europe. Rule of thumb: if you pay a household or commercial tariff, buy by J/TH – the Antminer S21 (17.5 J/TH) or the M63S+ (17 J/TH) beat the M50S. If your power is cheap or free (PV surplus, hosting), the purchase price per terahash matters more, and a used Antminer S19k Pro from German stock is often the faster and cheaper start.
