Why feeding into the grid is the expensive mistake

Exporting surplus PV in Germany often earns only a low single-digit cent amount per kWh depending on system and commissioning year. The same kilowatt-hour inside a miner produces Bitcoin, and under current network conditions with efficient hardware that value is regularly a multiple higher. That is the entire economic core of solar mining: replacing poorly paid export with higher-value self-consumption.

On top of that, a miner is a perfectly controllable load. It can be throttled or stopped in seconds, needs no inrush current and no flow temperature — more flexible as a surplus consumer than a heat pump, boiler or wallbox.

Sizing the system correctly

As a guide: 1 kWp of PV yields roughly 900–1,100 kWh per year in Germany. A miner at 1.7 kW continuous (e.g. Avalon Q) uses about 40 kWh per day at full load — far more than a small array delivers during daylight. In practice you run the miner on surplus or at part load.

Two designs work well: a small efficient miner running many hours on solar, or a larger unit switched on only around midday. Which is better depends on array size, storage and your consumption profile.

Surplus-based control

Control comes from a smart-meter reading or the inverter interface: the miner is released when surplus is available and throttled when you start drawing from the grid. Braiins OS allows stepped power control instead of pure on/off, which substantially increases usable hours.

Important: miners are most economical running continuously. Frequent cycling costs yield, so with battery storage prefer steady part-load operation over constant switching.

Using waste heat in winter

In winter, when PV yields drop, the maths inverts and the heat matters. A miner converts practically all input power into heat. Using it to warm a room, a workshop or preheat water replaces heating energy and yields Bitcoin as a by-product. This dual use is what makes mining viable at many locations in the first place.
