Mining hosting costs compared: 4.5–9 ct/kWh versus household power, break-even per miner and when self-mining stays cheaper – with a worked example.
The one difference that matters
Self-mining means you pay your household or commercial tariff and live with noise, heat and maintenance. Hosting means you pay an industrial kWh price plus a service margin and give up control. Everything else — uptime, support, monitoring — is secondary. Compare your own kWh price against the hosting price first.
When self-mining wins
Self-mining wins with cheap own power — surplus solar, night tariffs, commercial rates — or when you genuinely reuse the waste heat and save on heating. Then your effective electricity price often beats any hosting offer because you pay no margin.
When hosting wins
Hosting wins when your location has expensive power, noise is a problem, or you want to scale several units without building electrics and cooling yourself. At industrial 5–9 ct/kWh hosting clearly beats any household tariff despite the margin.
The hybrid
Many customers run both: one unit at home for winter heat, more units hosted for continuous operation. That spreads risk and uses both cost advantages at once.
Mining hosting costs compared
Hosting is almost always billed per kWh and typically runs between 4.5 and 9 ct/kWh in Germany, depending on contract length, unit count and site. Household power usually costs 28 to 38 ct/kWh, a commercial tariff 15 to 25 ct/kWh.
Example Antminer S21 at 3.5 kW continuous: 3.5 kW x 24 h = 84 kWh per day. At 6 ct/kWh hosting that is about €5.04 per day or roughly €151 per month. At 32 ct household power it would be €26.88 per day or about €806 per month — a difference of more than €650 per unit per month.
Smaller machines scale linearly: an S19k Pro at 2.76 kW costs around €119 per month hosted at 6 ct, versus about €636 at home at 32 ct.
What a hosting price must include
- Price per kWh including all levies, with no separate recalculation later
- Rack, space and setup fees: one-off or monthly?
- Monitoring, reboots and cleaning inside the service package
- Minimum term, notice period and price adjustment clause
- Payout: do the machines mine into your own pool account?
- Insurance and liability in case of downtime or defects
Break-even: when hosting pays off
Rule of thumb: hosting pays as soon as your own electricity price exceeds the hosting price plus service margin and you cannot use the waste heat yourself. At 6 ct hosting versus 32 ct household power the yearly saving per machine is four figures — with surplus solar or genuine heat reuse the picture flips completely.
